I remember this quite vividly! Then in 1983 I got a new job and my boss was there outside helping people as he told me the horrors of the story of that day! I believe they found architectural failure, cutting corners and bolts etc were to blame. Shoddy workmanship! Very sad! But, the Hyatt was a very bad unncessary scene!

When I was working in South Korea, a lot of idiots tried to convince me to take a trip to North Korea. "Just staple a piece of paper over a page in your passport so the US won't know what you did. " I replied that it was contemptible to exercise such a privilege when our Korean coworkers had family across that border whom they would never see. Did Otto deserve it? No, but he and his friends had much cause for shame.

Most likely the american man acted with american hegemonic behavior when he was arrested for stealing a portrait of the NK leader in a hotel floor that was strictly government offices unauthorized zone to the public. He made a bet with other young people to do this and somehow got the elevator code to access that floor when he was in China. Stealing a portrait was actually his reason to visit NK, like most united statian he thinks NK is a joke, big mistake. The N Koreans gave him a chance to return the stolen portrait before he left instead of arresting him on the spot from security cameras but he didn't and he was stopped on departure and imprisoned for activity against the government of Korea. You can only surmise how the american made his case much worse probably threatened officials, like "you will regret this, iam an american, blah blah.". This lead to harsh treatment. You can go to visit NK and it is the most enjoyable experience if you go with a spirit of respect and trying to appreciate and understand another culture. But go with american hegemony and return home feet first.

There's something weird about Otto Warmbier. He reminds me a bit of Maximilian Krah in Germany. Also that weird vibe. I can't put my finger on it though. I could be wrong.
